Sometimes, life changes in a moment. An accident. A pain that stays. A body that no longer moves the way it once did. And the feeling that maybe nothing can change it.

But sometimes, that moment becomes the beginning of something entirely different.
TaoPatch was born from that very experience not from a business idea, but from a personal need to find a better way.
What began with Fabio Fontana, Founder — Tao Technologies / TaoPatch searching for answers evolved into years of research, collaboration with clinicians and universities, and a new approach to non-invasive neuromodulation.
Because things change.
Science changes. Technology changes.
And sometimes, when purpose meets persistence, it all works.
Today, TaoPatch is worn by hundreds of thousands of people, studied by researchers, and used by athletes and people living with neurological conditions. TaoPatch born from pain, driven by science, and built around the people it aims to help.
From Personal Pain to a New Era of Wearable Wellness

TaoPatch was born from personal necessity. Years ago, a serious accident left its founder with chronic pain and mobility challenges that conventional approaches could not resolve. That experience led him to explore new possibilities in biophysics, low-level light therapy, and the interaction between electromagnetic frequencies and the human body.
Through years of study, he became interested in the dual nature of frequencies how they can negatively affect the body in certain conditions, yet, when applied correctly, can also support natural healing processes, as seen in photobiomodulation and laser-based therapies.
He identified a fundamental gap in wearable technology. Most wearables measure the body tracking heart rate, sleep, steps and other biological signals but few actively support the body’s functions. This led to the vision behind TaoPatch: a wearable designed not simply to monitor biology, but to interact with it.
Using nanotechnology, TaoPatch captures the body’s infrared heat and external light and converts this energy into precise wavelengths of light, delivering it to neurological and acupuncture points. The aim is to support communication between the nervous system, muscles and receptors without batteries, chemicals or drugs.
The journey began with a small team in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy, and a single product initially designed to support muscle function and posture. An early turning point came when a person living with multiple sclerosis reported improvements that extended beyond the original purpose of the device. That experience influenced the direction of TaoPatch’s research, leading to further studies with universities and clinicians across areas including multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, balance and neuroception.
From there, TaoPatch progressed step by step from medical-device registration and the development of a professional network involving thousands of physicians and therapists, to an expanding product family designed for areas including sport, emotional wellbeing, neurological conditions and regeneration.

Today, hundreds of thousands of devices have been distributed worldwide. And the technology gained wider public attention when a prominent tennis champion was seen wearing TaoPatch at Roland Garros.
Each milestone has reinforced the same principle: stay close to the science, and even closer to the people using the technology.
What Sets TaoPatch Apart
TaoPatch’s differentiation rests on three key pillars: physics, heritage and accountability.
First is its physics. TaoPatch uses nanotechnology, including quantum-dot nanocrystals, to convert the body’s own heat and external light into specific wavelengths of light. The technology is designed to operate without batteries or charging, allowing continuous use over extended periods. According to the company, this translates into up to 720 hours of use per month and 8,760 hours per year.
Second are its roots. TaoPatch brings together three worlds: modern neurology, the principles of acupuncture refined over thousands of years, and modern photonics and biomedical engineering. Rather than dismissing traditional knowledge, the approach seeks to explore how modern physics and technology can help understand and potentially enhance those principles.
Third, and most importantly, is accountability. Unlike a passive wearable that simply records information, a device that makes claims around posture, balance or pain needs to demonstrate its value through evidence and real-world experience. TaoPatch therefore emphasises clinical research, trained healthcare professionals and a satisfaction guarantee, positioning the burden of proof as an important part of its approach.
Looking ahead, TaoPatch sees significant potential in what it describes as the emerging field of nanomedicine technologies designed to interact with the body’s signalling systems. Photobiomodulation is one area of particular interest, with ongoing research exploring how specific wavelengths of light may influence cellular function, mitochondria and the nervous system.
The company also anticipates a growing role for artificial intelligence in personalised wellness, where systems could potentially learn how an individual’s nervous system responds and adapt interventions accordingly. Alongside this, non-invasive neuromodulation could become increasingly mainstream as interest grows in non-pharmacological approaches.
For TaoPatch, however, technology remains secondary to purpose.
The company was not created simply to sell wearable patches. Its origins are rooted in a personal experience of chronic pain and the search for solutions when conventional approaches offered limited answers. That experience continues to influence how the company evaluates new products, markets and partnerships beginning with one fundamental question: Can this genuinely help the people who use it?
That purpose is maintained through three principles: keeping research at the centre of the organisation, remaining directly connected with users and healthcare professionals, and building teams around curiosity as much as ambition.
Because, as TaoPatch’s philosophy puts it: “Feet among the people, mind in the future.”
Challenges, Vision & the Future of Wearable Health Technology
For TaoPatch, one of the greatest challenges has always been skepticism and its leadership views that skepticism with gratitude. Introducing a technology that does not fit neatly into existing categories naturally invites doubt. Rather than avoiding it, TaoPatch chose to earn trust gradually through research, measurable outcomes and real-world experience. Healthcare professionals tested the technology on themselves and their patients before recommending it, pushing the company to adopt a level of rigour that has since become part of its identity.
Another major challenge was transforming an Italian innovation into an international company. Different regulatory environments, healthcare cultures and market expectations required patience, adaptability and strong local partnerships. There were also periods when resources were limited and belief in the mission became the company’s greatest asset. These experiences shaped TaoPatch’s deliberately long-term approach: build slowly on solid evidence rather than quickly on promises that cannot be kept.
Looking ahead, TaoPatch believes wearable technology will evolve from observation to intervention.
The first generation of wearables largely answered: “What is happening in my body?” The next generation will increasingly ask: “What can be done about it, right now?”
This points towards wearables that could actively support the nervous system, assist with pain management, balance and posture, and stress regulation — continuously and passively, without relying on pharmacological interventions.
TaoPatch also envisions a convergence between tracking and therapeutic technology. Instead of devices simply collecting information, future wearables could potentially form closed-loop systems that sense changes in the body and respond in real time.
Ultimately, the goal is for wearable health technology to become almost invisible — not another gadget that needs to be charged, monitored or constantly consulted, but something that quietly works in the background of everyday life.
For TaoPatch, the destination is clear: Technology should not replace the body’s ability to regulate itself. It should help the body rediscover and support that ability.
Purpose, Lessons & The Road Ahead
For TaoPatch, the journey offers a few clear lessons for entrepreneurs and innovators.
The first is to let a real problem guide the mission ideally one that has been experienced personally. TaoPatch was born from its founder’s own experience with injury and chronic pain, giving the company a purpose strong enough to carry it through years of uncertainty. When purpose is personal, it becomes more than a statement; it becomes a source of resilience.
The second lesson is to embrace skepticism. When a technology challenges established categories, doubt is inevitable. Instead of resisting it, TaoPatch has used skepticism as motivation to pursue stronger evidence, research and transparency. For the company, the burden of proof is not an obstacle but an opportunity to build something far more valuable: credibility.
The third is to protect the long term. Purpose-driven companies can lose their way either by running out of resources or by pursuing growth so aggressively that they lose sight of why they began. TaoPatch’s approach has therefore been to avoid shortcuts, resist exaggerated claims and ensure that growth does not move faster than the science.
The company also places strong emphasis on surrounding itself with people who believe in the mission but are willing to challenge it. Agreement may be comfortable, but honest feedback is useful.
Some of the most transformative feedback came from people living with multiple sclerosis. TaoPatch had initially been developed to support muscular communication and posture, but reports from MS users describing changes in balance, stability and daily quality of life encouraged the company to investigate further. One particularly significant early case helped redirect the research programme and contributed to subsequent formal studies.
Athletes have also played an important role. Elite sport provides an exceptionally demanding environment, where professional and Olympic-level athletes can provide highly specific feedback on proprioception, movement and recovery. Yet, beyond performance, the experiences that remain most meaningful are often quieter someone walking more steadily, sleeping better or experiencing less pain.
Those experiences continue to influence product decisions.
Expanding a Global Mission
TaoPatch’s international expansion is taking a measured approach. Europe remains the foundation, building outward from its Italian headquarters and leveraging its established clinical and professional network. The company sees Europe as an important base for its identity as an Italian med-tech innovator.
The Middle East represents another significant opportunity, particularly given the region’s growing investment in healthcare, wellness and preventive technologies and its openness to innovation.
The Americas are also expected to become an important market, from North America’s growing interest in integrative and non-pharmacological approaches to the significant potential of South America.
Across every new market, TaoPatch follows the same philosophy: respect local regulations, work with credible healthcare professionals and allow documented results to build trust.
The ambition is not simply to be everywhere quickly. It is to be trusted everywhere it goes.
A Message for the Future
For TaoPatch, the most important innovations often begin as “heresies” ideas that challenge what people believe is possible. When the concept of a small, battery-free patch powered by the body’s own heat and using light to interact with the nervous system was first introduced, it was met with skepticism. But the journey from doubt to acceptance was built not on luck, but on evidence, persistence and the willingness to keep proving what was once considered unconventional.
Today, TaoPatch technology is used by hundreds of thousands of people, studied by researchers, and trusted by elite athletes and people living with serious neurological conditions.
The message is simple: be demanding. Ask for the science. Ask for the evidence. Ask difficult questions of every company in the health-technology space, including TaoPatch. That scrutiny does not hold innovation back; it pushes the entire industry forward.
For those developing ideas that do not fit existing categories, the future will not necessarily belong to those who simply follow the market. It may belong to those with the patience to prove something genuinely new.

The human body has an extraordinary capacity to regulate and heal itself. The role of innovators is to develop better tools that can support that natural potential.
The future belongs to those humble enough to learn from the body and bold enough to build for it.
